Group 5 Rough-Leaved Mesembs
Genus name. The genus name was derived from a combination of the Greek words titanos (chalk) and opsis (appearance), alluding to the raised calcium-filled warts on the leaf surfaces.
Distribution. Species of Titanopsis are distributed in three main areas of southern Africa. In southern Namibia they grow as far north as Lüderitz. To the east, the range straddles the Orange River in a broad north-south belt extending into Bushmanland. In central South Africa, the distribution extends from the Northern Cape Province into the Free State. This is an arid part of southern Africa where either winter (Lüderitz) or summer rainfall (Kimberley and surroundings) can predominate.
