Genus name. The name is derived from the Greek words mitra (bishop's mitre, bishop's cap), and phyllon (leaf).

Distribution. The genus is found in the Richtersveld in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The climate of this area is influenced by the Antarctic Benguela current and is characterised by the frequent occurence of mist, which adds small amounts of moisture to an otherwise extremely dry area.
