Genus name. The genus is named after Prof. Dr. H. Ihlenfeldt, long-time student of mesembs and professor of Botany at the University of Hamburg, Germany.

Distribution. Both species occur in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa, and prefer quartzitic soils in Bushmanland and the adjacent areas of Namaqualand. These areas receive about 125 mm rainfall per year.
