Genus name. The name Cheridopsis was derived from the Greek words cheiris, meaning sheath and opsis, meaning resembling, inreference to the papery leaf sheaths that are formed during the resting perioid.

Distribution. The distribution range of the species of Cheiridopsis covers a broad band stretching from Lüderitz, in Namibia, southwards throught the Richtersveld and Namaqualand in the Northern Cape Province, to the northern parts of the Western Cape Province, South Africa. The largest concentration of species is in the vicinity of Steinkopf and Platbakkies. Winter rainfall predominates across the entire distribution.
